370Z revealed

The Z is one of those cars that strikes me somewhere deep down in my design gut. The lines, curves, shape...everything. It all comes together into my ideal vehicle. I’ve loved the 350 for a while now but its always had a few issues that bugged me. Her ass was a little wide. The interior was a little drab. All of that seems to have been fixed in the latest evolution of the Z-car. The 370Z is a beauty. A lovely interior, shorter and more finely proportioned and even a bit more power. I have a life goal of owning a new sports car before I hit the big 3-0. Next year is my last chance. The 370Z couldn’t have come out at a better time.

I’ve been experimenting a lot with wallpapers lately. They’ve let me break out of the web design mold and try something new. This new set is an exploration of color, geometry, style and composition. I’ve posted them all up on Flickr for you get to a better look. I recommend checking out the full resolution to see the details. Alternatively you could just download the zip. Let me know which one you like best. I’m currently using Deep Sea.

My Dad

My dad has always been a bit ridiculous. He revels in self-deprecating humor and it’s a trait I admire. On Sept. 11 this year he took it upon himself to drive around the small town of Hopkinsville, KY with a giant American flag tied to his scooter. He brought smiles to a lot of faces, reminding others that you don’t have to take yourself quite so seriously. In the wake of tragedy it’s good to remember that life is still full of wonderfully silly moments. Like a middle-aged IT Director on a tiny scooter with giant American Flag. I love you, dad.

DB Clay closing it’s doors

I was quite sad to hear that DB Clay will be shutting down. They have some of the damned nicest, prettiest, most interesting wallets I’ve ever come across. They are a design icon in Portland and it’s unfortunate to see them going away. I’ve been talking with some friends about a possible save DB Clay movement. Whatever happens I wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors. I’ll keep rocking Dark Bark as my guilty pleasure, no matter how ugly my wife thinks it is.

I’ve been sitting on this one for a week now and kept forgetting to post about it. The new Wario Land video at YouTube is probably the best use of a Flash ad I’ve seen on the web in a long time. I’m incredibly impressed with just how functional and accurate everything is. I didn’t suspect for a minute that anything was amiss. You really should go see it for yourself if you haven’t already. I’m also very intrigued by the game and it’s cartoony graphics. It takes me back to the days of games like Battletoads and The Simpsons Arcade.

I put together a slew of new wallpapers for Jive today. 14 color variations, from dark to light, colorful to dismal and everything in between. I don’t know if anyone else really wants Jive wallpapers but you can download them for yourself. Inspiration and help happily garnered from Bartelme.

Blurry Screenshots in OSX

I’m really at a loss as to why this is happening. Everything is blurry when I use the Mac shortcut to take a screenshot. If I do the same thing with Skitch I don’t have any issues. I’m going to try and duplicate this on other Macs around the office. Has anyone else ever had this problem before?

Contest at Flockey

I was trolling about the interwebs for some inspiration when I stumbled across an interesting contest over at Flockey. They are giving away some pretty nice packages as a means of promoting their business. If you need a little design help and are on a limited budget you should check it out. They are giving away everything from logo design to a full website design.

Refreshed the Site

If you can’t tell I’ve been doing a bit of cleanup on the site for the past few days. I was getting a bit bored of the dark and dreary but I also didn’t want to completely dump everything about my old design. I’ve traded in the dark greys for some clean whites and crisp grey lines. I decided to keep the green as it’s simply one of my favorite colors. I’m still trying to decide if the new header is too bright. Perhaps it lacks a bit of contrast?

Overall I am very happy with it. I’ve also begun to put my portfolio back online. I developed a new Expression Engine backend driving all the thumbnails and imagery. It’s still a bit more manual than I’d like but I’m pretty happy for the most part. My next step is to get a few more sites up along with some of my print, illustration and identity work. After that I plan on moving on to my logo. The fleur-de-lis will stick around but I’ve got some ideas for some interesting twist on it.

Let me know if you find any bugs. I’m also very open to suggestions and criticism.

I traded in my other MMO addiction for Warhammer Online. So far I’m loving it. I am playing a Black Orc named Glarg on the Volkmar server. Any game where I can stuff a dwarf into a barrel and kick it off a wall gets two thumbs up from me. Now bring me my choppa so I’s can git to slash’n and bash’n stunties and humies! WAAAGH!!!
